A popular alternative for treating your pool water is saltwater electrolysis. The salt water concentration in the pool water is treated from 1.5‰ to about 3.5‰. The disinfection takes place through an electrochemical process of electrolysis.
Sodium chloride is a salt with the chemical formula NaCl and consists of two elements: sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl). When salt is dissolved in water and an electric current is passed through this solution, the sodium chloride is broken down to form sodium and chlorine. The sodium immediately reacts with the surrounding water to form sodium hydroxide. This in turn reacts with chlorine to form salt and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). In your pool, this compound releases its oxygen to turn back into salt (NaCl).
